Yasuaki Arai, MD, FSIR, FCIRSE Executive Advisor to President, National Cancer Center Chief, Department of Diagnostic Radiology, National Cancer Center Hospital Yasuaki Arai, M.D. received his medical degree at Jikei University School of Medicine and doctor of medical science at Nagoya City University Graduate School of Medicine. He completed his internal medicine training at Tokyo Medical Center, and then started his career as interventional radiology (IR) at the department of diagnostic and interventional radiology, Aichi Cancer Center.
After 7 years as the department chief, he moved to National Cancer Center as the chief of the department of diagnostic radiology. Between July 2012 and March 2016, he also devoted himself to the service as the director of the hospital to pursue better management with open dialogue, to improve medical safety and governance, and to activate research and treatment including palliative care.
The hospital established ‘Interventional Radiology Center’ to accept more patients. Currently, he has another role to support the President of National Cancer Center as Executive Advisor. Engaging in interventional radiology, Dr. Arai has introduced some new devices and technique for better treatment, such as implantable catheter and port system for hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy, and interventional CT system (Angio-CT).
The latest device he invented by working with an industry is a tip-deflecting microcatheter aiming for easier manipulation. In 2002, he established the Japan Interventional Radiology in Oncology Study Group (JIVROSG) to build a framework for conducting clinical trials. JIVROSG has conducted clinical trials in the field of interventional oncology to pursue the evidence, including palliative care. The result of the clinical trial with Korean physicians focusing on transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma led to Lipiodol authorization in Japan and its indication outside of Japan.
As for educational activities, Dr. Arai has given lectures related IR and clinical trials worldwide and built bridges at home and overseas. There are many visitors from overseas to observe cases at National Cancer Center Hospital. Some of them spend several months to a year with his IR team. In addition to treat patients, Dr. Arai is an Associate Editor of several leading journals, including Journal of Vascular & Interventional Radiology. He serves as a consultant for Japanese government agencies and the president of Japanese Society of Interventional Radiology (JSIR). JSIR drives forward its activities to go international and to spread interventional radiology as a treatment option to public and administration in Japan.
Dr. Arai has a son and two daughters with his wife. He has always full and busy days in the hospital, while he sometimes enjoys cooking, singing to his own piano accompaniment, and mountain climbing. He has experiences climbing Himalayan Mountains two times, Mt. Everest (8848m) and Mt. I am a Consultant Neuroradiologist at the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) with special interest in Interventional Neuroradiology and been in post since 2009. I undertook general medical training and completed my MRCP (UK) prior to taking up Specialist Training in Radiology at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals.
I developed an interest in Neuroradiology and completed a 2-year fellowship in Diagnostic & Interventional Neuroradiology at Newcastle Teaching Hospitals. I then went to Salzburg, Austria where I did short 4-month fellowship training in Stroke interventional work under the European Exchange programme.
I am very passionate of Interventional Stroke work and obtained the Clinical governance/Trust board approval to treat suitable stroke patients via mechanical thrombectomy and stenting immediately after my appointment at the UHNS. With the support of our Stroke Team, we have pioneered in Interventional Stroke treatment and treated the largest number of such cases in the UK.
We have one of the best clinical outcomes for such patients with the lowest mortality rates in the UK. This work has been nominated for around 8 national awards within the last 2 years in various categories of HSJ, BMJ, Patient Safety and Care integration awards. I am actively involved in Stroke research and have published various papers with our stroke team.
